Shriner opened up about a very important quality he shares with his on-screen alter-ego.

I’m a Survivor/I’m Not Gon’ Give Up

Shriner, who plays legacy character daytime icon Scott Baldwin on General Hospital, is in the GH game for the long haul. Soaps always need a “sleazy lawyer,” the talented thespian noted.

“My first job as a kid in Texas was as a Fuller Brush man. And now here I am–all these years later–still trying to stick my foot in the door so they can’t get rid of me,” Shriner told TV Guide’s Michael Logan, our fave soap journalist here at Soap Cities.

Shriner keeps his courtroom skills sharp by watching Perry Mason reruns, the actor offered.

The actor said his staying power has its roots in the same insatiable actorly desire that kept Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, recently profiled on the first season of FX’s Feud, in the Hollywood game for so long.

His Base Won’t Desert Him

Much like a certain president, Shriner said his “core voters” won’t desert him.

“The old-time viewers–ones who remember how he was wronged when Laura dropped him like a hot potato–always stand by him,” Shriner said of the character he’s portrayed since 1977. On August 2nd, he celebrates his 40th year on the ABC sudser.

Shriner took Scotty from “golden boy”–with whom “everything was good until that clown Luke Spencer showed up”–to Port Charles villain.

“You can’t blame it on the bossa nova. You gotta blame it on Tony Geary,” Shriner joked.

A Sparkling Soap Career

Shriner has also rounded his daytime soap resume with memorable roles on As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Young and the Restless.

Don’t Miss: Michael Easton penned a touching goodbye to his GH costar, Rebecca Budig.

He’s starred in many other films and TV shows. He even played a waiter on Melrose Place!
