How does Wally Kurth continue to juggle two legacy roles on two different soaps (General Hospital and Days of Our Lives) on two different networks (ABC, NBC) at the same time?? His secret: being a recurring character with NO contracts on either show!
Wally Kurth Doing Double Duty (The Triple D’s!)
Kurth gives the deets to TV Guide Magazine’s Daytime Columnist Michael Logan in the latest double issue, dated June 12-25 and scheduled to hit the newsstands and supermarkets this Friday.
Currently, Kurth plays Ned Quartermaine (formerly Ned Ashton) on GH and Justin Kiriakis on Days. It’s rare in network television: producers at both shows call each other to work out the logistics when Kurth is needed at both shows on the same day. “Sometimes I’m at Days in the morning then zip over to GH in the afternoon,” says Kurth.
Did you know before Kurth started playing both roles simultaneously, he was unemployed for three years?! Jane Elliot, who played Ned’s mom Tracy Quartermaine on GH gave him some wise advice: “Stay positive. God’s giving you an opportunity to spend even more time with your family.” She told him to look at his situation as a “gift.”
Advice from former GH Co-star Jane Elliot (ex-Tracy Q)
The exit of the venerable Elliot made Kurth do something he would never normally do: pitch the continuation of the Quartermaine storyline to GH Executive Producer Frank Valentini. Kurth said: “And Frank got it. He knows how important that family is to the show.”
How does he feel about the chemistry between Justin and his ex Adrienne (Judi Evans) on Days? Should they get back together? In typical soap fashion the actor responded: “They seem to have good chemistry but, when they’re apart the chemistry’s even better!” Don’t you agree, dear Soap Cities readers?
Only in Daytime
Logan points out to Kurth his characters proposed marriage and were turned down on the same day. Kurth’s laughs and gives a great response: “Hey, shouldn’t that get me in the Guinness Book of World Records or something?”
